KOA Nostalgia

With visions of snow in our heads and cold in our bones, we were determined to drive the more southern route back to Ohio. Even if that meant driving through Oklahoma again with its lack of rest areas on I-40.

Despite already blowing our budget on excessive travel in such a short period of time – diesel being the culprit – I decided to book a night at a KOA.

There were a few reasons I chose KOA. I knew there was a KOA in Oklahoma City because my friend and I stayed there in 1999. That 1999 trip was the first time I was tent camping. We stayed at KOAs across the country. KOAs have a special place in my heart and I love how different they all are.

It wasn’t until we had gotten there that I realized the soap caddy I had in the van was the same one I bought during that 1999 trip. It’s a shame they no longer sell them because they are very useful and durable.

During my original stay, it started storming. With knowledge of a tornado that had come through earlier that year, we hastily left the tent and spent a sleepless night in the car.

During this most recent stay it once again rained, though it did not storm. Coincidentally our campsite was right in front of the storm shelters. I’m pretty sure those weren’t there in 1999.

After a hot shower the next morning, we decided that staying at a KOA once in a while to do laundry and take a shower isn’t a bad idea.

  1. It’s always a delight to read about other people’s nostalgic camping experiences, and your story about the KOA brings back fond memories of my own. I can relate to the charm and comfort that KOA campgrounds bring, as they’ve been part of many memorable trips I’ve taken over the years. Their consistency and quality of facilities make them a reliable choice, especially when you’re in need of a good shower and laundry facilities during a long journey.

Your mention of the soap caddy from your 1999 trip is a testament to the lasting memories and connections that we make while camping. It’s fascinating how a simple item can transport us back in time and remind us of the adventures we’ve had.

I completely agree with your sentiment that staying at a KOA once in a while is a great idea for some added convenience and comfort during extended travels. It’s nice to have a familiar and trusted option like KOA when exploring new places, and it’s wonderful that you’ve been able to create new memories at the same location you visited years ago.

Your story has inspired me to consider booking a stay at a KOA for my next road trip. Thank you for sharing your experiences and happy camping!
