Idaho: Truly a Gem State

We traveled to and through Idaho, the Gem State, two different times during the month of August. The first time we went in order to have our van serviced. Our entry into Idaho was dramatic. Our exit from Wyoming was via the Teton Pass. The road was a steep 10% grade up and then down.Continue reading “Idaho: Truly a Gem State”

Glacier National Park: Beauty Through Wildfire Smoke

The night before we visited Glacier National Park, we planned on dispersed camping in Flathead National Forest around Hungry Horse Reservoir. As we approached we saw smoke in the distance and then saw a sign that the reservoir was closed due to fire. We found another dispersed camping site within a few miles of theContinue reading “Glacier National Park: Beauty Through Wildfire Smoke”

Visit with a Friend Leads To a Love of Kayaking

Almost two years after we were supposed to visit a dear friend (one of my friends who traveled with me on my first trip to Slovenia) in Montana, we finally made it. The previous trip was canceled due to wildfires, not that there were no wildfires in Montana, but they weren’t as close at first.Continue reading “Visit with a Friend Leads To a Love of Kayaking”

Exploring Our First Ghost Towns

We visited our first ghost town: Garnet Ghost Town, in Montana. Not only was it interesting and educational, but also dog-friendly! Poppy got to explore all of the buildings with us. I highly recommend anyone traveling through the area around Bonner and all of the beautiful lakes around there. Garnet was established in 1895 duringContinue reading “Exploring Our First Ghost Towns”

Starwagon Lands at Craters Of The Moon

Our original plan after leaving Yellowstone National Park was to drive up to Glacier National Park. However, ever since we camped in Shoshone National Forest, we were having trouble starting the van each morning. The very first time was a little nerve-wracking because although we were at a developed campground, we had no cell reception,Continue reading “Starwagon Lands at Craters Of The Moon”

Yellowstone National Park: Land of Geysers

Yellowstone National Park and Grand Teton National Park are so close together that we had no reason not to visit. Since we were staying outside of Jackson, WY, we only planned to spend a day there. But as most of our plans go, we arrived later than planned. The drive was beautiful We took advantageContinue reading “Yellowstone National Park: Land of Geysers”

Sunsets Over the Teton Range

We were fortunate enough to be able to boondock in the Bridger-Teton National Forest outside of the National Elk Refuge. We had uninterrupted views of the Teton Range, including Grand Teton. Sunsets and the skies were spectacular each night. I’m just going to share photos of these spectacular sunsets and evening skies.

A Split Second Decision, A Chance Encounter

Despite the beauty of our dispersed camping site near Sundance, WY, it was time to continue our journey to Grand Teton National Park. The GPS ETA was 7.5 hours, but for us in our slow van, it would mean adding a couple of hours to that estimate. The day was hot, and there wasn’t muchContinue reading “A Split Second Decision, A Chance Encounter”

Hiking The Black Hills With Poppy the Mountain Goat

Misadventure Ensues When we adopted Poppy, we knew she had a lot of energy and loved to go for walks, but we weren’t sure how far she could go since she is on the smaller side (not quite 14 lbs). We started with the 1.5-mile Stockade Lake Trail loop to warm her and us upContinue reading “Hiking The Black Hills With Poppy the Mountain Goat”

The Black Hills: Scenic Byways

Besides driving the Wildlife Loop in Custer State Park, we drove the Needles Highway and Iron Mountain. Needles Highway On the first day, we took the Needles Highway. Fortunately, we are driving an itty bitty van because the tunnels on this particular byway are narrow and short, less than 9 ft and 10 ft sometimes.Continue reading “The Black Hills: Scenic Byways”
